Transgender and Transsexual

The transgender flag.
Picture
Transgender refers to someone whose gender identity doesn't match up with their biological sex. For example, if a biologically female person identifies as agender, they are transgender (whereas if a biologically female person identified as a woman, she would be cisgender). The prefix trans- comes from Latin, and means "across". It's also a good idea to say "transgender people" instead of just "transgenders".
Transsexual refers to someone who actively tries to make themselves appear to be of a sex different than what they are. Some transsexual people are content with simply dressing and acting like the opposite sex, others wish to change their sex entirely. They typically seek sex reassignment surgery. This process will let them become the sex that they truly want to be.
